Socialism's next test: Swing states
In the crowded Democratic field running to replace Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, there’s a surprising frontrunner for a battleground state: a democratic-socialist line cook who has called to abolish the police. Francesca Hong, a 37-year-old restaurant owner and single mother who became the state’s first Asian-American assembly member in 2021, has surged to the lead in several early polls after launching a long-shot bid on a deeply progressive platform. Hong is part of an array of lefty candidates with working-class credentials running in competitive states and districts up and down the ballot in this year’s midterm elections — a crop emboldened by the popularity of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a turn toward economic populism amid widespread cost-of-living concerns. Abdul El-Sayed is running from the left of Haley Stevens and Mallory McMorrow in the competitive Michigan Senate primary. Zach Wahls, who is backed by Elizabeth Warren, is locked in a tight contest against the Chuck Schumer-supported Josh Turek for Iowa’s Senate nomination. In Colorado’s 8th District, where Dems see a flip opportunity, Manny Rutinel is running against the more moderate Shannon Bird. And last month, Graham Platner got a boost when Schumer-endorsed Maine Gov. Janet Mills dropped out of the race to oust GOP Sen. Susan Collins. Establishment Democrats worry that these figures — whose platforms play well among primary voters but could bite them in a general election — might spoil the midterms at a time when the party has the wind at its back, desperate to claw its way out of the wilderness and still weary of the “woke” allegations that Republicans effectively wielded against Kamala Harris. “If Democrats hope to beat Republican incumbents in red and purple districts, then they cannot run candidates who are far outside the mainstream of their district,” the center-left think tank Third Way wrote in a memo published last month. Hong says the party establishment just lacks imagination. “I think they're underestimating voters,” Hong said in an interview. “I think that has always been a problem for the Democratic Party — that we are not listening to how they are feeling.” Her platform includes free child care, a $20 minimum wage and a full moratorium on data center construction. She is an outspoken critic of the Israeli government and helped lead Wisconsin’s “uninstructed” pressure campaign on the Biden administration’s posture toward Gaza. She’s faced backlash for past calls to “abolish” the police . And she has suggested as governor she would call the state National Guard to arrest federal ICE agents. But Hong doesn’t think her far-left politics would pose a risk in a general election. “The liability is having someone who is the establishment and wants to maintain the status quo,” she said. There’s still months to go before the Aug. 11 primary to decide who will face off against Tom Tiffany, the presumed GOP nominee endorsed by President Donald Trump. Still, Hong is leading early polls among nine Democratic candidates — making her an unusual frontrunner to lead a state Trump narrowly won in 2024. Wisconsin has a deep history of socialism , including three socialist mayors of Milwaukee between 1910 and 1960. The state boasts one of the Senate’s most conservative members, Sen. Ron Johnson, but also one of its most progressive, Sen. Tammy Baldwin. And progressive Democrats in Wisconsin are quick to point out that Sanders, the country’s democratic-socialist standard-bearer, won 71 out of Wisconsin’s 72 counties in 2016. Hong isn’t just running on a different platform than her competitors — she is also running “the most non-traditional race,” said Gordon Hintz, who served in the Wisconsin state assembly with Hong when he was Democratic minority leader. While other candidates have been more reserved so far, Hong spent — and surged — early on to boost her name recognition. Hong’s campaign says it has about 3,000 active volunteers and has already organized 250 events across the state, with an additional 230 planned for the coming months. “She has shown up, she's the only candidate currently who has built any infrastructure down in Rock County,” said Jim White, who leads Rock County Democrats. “She's the only person who has active canvassers, has people showing up at events, at meetings, she's the only one who seems to have increasing infrastructure to do outreach to voters, and that's been something that I think we've all really noticed.” But it’s still an uphill battle for Hong — especially in the fundraising fight. Mandela Barnes, the former lieutenant governor and failed Senate nominee is polling in second place and has raised more than $2 million. Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley has brought in more than $850,000. Hong has raised about $635,000, according to Wisconsin campaign finance records. Hong said she is focusing on turning one-time donors into recurring donors and has leaned on nontraditional fundraising tactics, like streaming. She has appeared with the progressive Twitch streamer Mike from PA and with Mercury Stardust, a TikToker with more than 2.6 million followers who describes herself as “The Trans Handy Ma’am.” Next month, Hong is planning to stream a DJ set and a cooking demo on Twitch, according to her campaign. Both White and Hintz noted they still have not decided who they’ll vote for in the primary. But they both guessed part of Hong’s appeal to voters — particularly those who are young and politically disengaged — was because she is “fun.” Hong is, for example, known to host fundraisers at karaoke bars. Her go-to song ? “I Will Survive.” Like this content? Consider signing up for POLITICO's Playbook newsletter .

Trump jumps into Republican primaries for governor in South Carolina, Iowa and Oklahoma
COLUMBIA, S.C. — President Donald Trump endorsed three Republican gubernatorial candidates Friday, wading into contests in South Carolina, Iowa and Oklahoma that have pitted allies against each other in a fierce competition for their party leader’s blessing. In a trio of social media posts, Trump gave his backing to South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, Iowa Rep. Randy Feenstra and former Oklahoma state senator Mike Mazzei as primary elections approach. Iowa’s primary is Tuesday, South Carolina’s is on June 9 and Oklahoma’s is on June 16. All three states are having their first competitive Republican gubernatorial primaries in years. For two terms, Evette has served alongside Gov. Henry McMaster, one of Trump’s earliest backers during his first presidential campaign. Earlier this year, the long-serving governor endorsed his No. 2, telegraphing to some that Trump’s backing could be next. On Friday, Trump expressed both appreciation for Evette and the state she represents, noting that she stumped for him in 2024. He also said “A BIG added plus” for her campaign is that Henry McMaster Jr. — the sitting governor’s son — may be Evette’s running mate. In the deep red state of South Carolina, the competition for the president’s support has been the most intense part of the primary race. In a separate post, Trump described Feenstra as “MAGA all the way” and said he would “fight tirelessly” for the state on issues including the economy, border security and support of law enforcement. Evette and Feenstra have been vocal about wanting Trump’s endorsement, in the hopes that it would carry weight in states that helped propel Trump’s return to office in 2024. Feenstra said earlier this year that he asked for Trump’s support, and much of Evette’s campaign media has featured photos of her next to Trump. Along with Feenstra, four other Republicans — state Rep. Eddie Andrews, businessman and former conservative political director Zach Lahn, former state Rep. Brad Sherman and former director of the state Department of Administrative Services Adam Steen — are in the primary to replace outgoing Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, who opted out of a third bid. Evette is competing for the South Carolina nomination against Rep. Nancy Mace, Rep. Ralph Norman and state Attorney General Alan Wilson. Mazzei is running to replace Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, who is finishing his second term. He’s competing against state Attorney General Gentner Drummond, former state House Speaker Charles McCall and former state public safety secretary Chip Keating. “Mike Mazzei has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next Governor of Oklahoma — HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!” Trump wrote on social media.

If Elon Musk merges SpaceX with Tesla he’ll create a $3.4 trillion behemoth—with zero profits
On May 27, CNBC reported that, according to a Tesla employee and others familiar with the talks, the EV-maker and rocket and AI purveyor are weighing a merger. Prior to that story, speculation about the potential tie-up was already running rampant. Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives put the chances for a combo at 80%, adding that the game plan was already in place for fusing operations at Elon Musk’s two biggest holdings. Long-time Tesla investor Ross Gerber, citing that Musk had already folded xAI into SpaceX , stated that this new gambit would advance his vision of running one big company amounting to a kind of Berkshire Hathaway of AI-driven tech. As of today, betting site Kalshi displays 52% odds that a mega-deal will happen by May of next year. Though it’s impossible to predict if so many Wall Streeters are making the right call, one thing’s for certain: Capitalizing on the incredible buzz surrounding the pending SpaceX IPO as a strategy for rescuing stricken Tesla makes perfect sense for Elon Musk. At an expected market cap of $1.75 trillion, SpaceX stock looks vastly overpriced (and, as I’ve written, an IPO prominent analysts are saying they’d avoid ). So Musk could marshal its inflated shares as currency to pay big for Tesla, even making the deal at its current market cap, a number that’s also over the top based on any conventional metric. Without SpaceX as an acquirer in the wings, Tesla looks highly vulnerable to a major selloff, given that it’s somehow maintaining a gigantic, even expanding valuation as its profits dwindle. “It’s been my intuition for a long time that this has to happen,” says David Trainer, CEO of research group New Constructs. “It’s the only way to bail out Tesla shareholders. It’s what Tesla investors have been expecting for a long time,” and in his view, the anticipated grand exit that’s been bolstering its stock. A SpaceX-Tesla union would mark by far the largest merger of all time. Remarkably, the two enterprises’ valuations are about equal, since Tesla’s market cap of $1.65 trillion sits just a shade behind SpaceX’s anticipated debut at $1.75 trillion. Let’s assume the most likely scenario that casts SpaceX as the buyer . To clinch the deal, it would need to issue a batch of new shares equivalent to 94% of the current number, reflecting the ratio between the two valuations ($1.65 trillion divided by $1.75 trillion). And that’s assuming SpaceX doesn’t have to pay a premium as almost always required in a takeover. SpaceX’s count would nearly double from the 4.1 billion shares its S-1 IPO filing effectively forecasts as of the debut, to 8 billion. If SpaceX can do the deal around the same price where its stock’s expected to open following the IPO, slated for mid-June, the combined SpaceX-Tesla would emerge sporting a valuation of $3.4 trillion. It would edge today’s levels for Amazon ($2.9 trillion) and Microsoft ($3.2 trillion) to rank as the world’s fifth most valuable publicly-traded company, trailing only Apple and Google ($4.6 trillion each), Nvidia ($5.2 trillion), and Saudi Aramco ($6.7 trillion). The problem: The behemoth wouldn’t be making any money, and the chances it can deliver for investors is beyond remote While the $3.4 trillion valuation is breathtakingly big, the combined profits generated by the two potential partners wouldn’t even qualify as shockingly small––based on recent results, they’d be negative. In the past four quarters, Tesla posted $3.9 billion in GAAP net earnings. That’s down from $15 billion in 2023, and $7.0 billion in 2024. Even the official figure overstates its core profitability. In the year ended in Q1, Tesla booked $1.6 billion from sales of regulatory credits, a category that’s already dwindling and Musk admits will probably disappear, plus proceeds from shrinking its cache of Bitcoin. So its real “core” earnings are more like $2.3 billion. But let’s stay optimistic and use the official GAAP number at $3.9 billion. What about SpaceX’s contribution? It registered a loss of $4.94 billion last year, and the trend’s downwards: It made a tiny but still positive $791 million in 2024. Its Starlink “connectivity” mobile and broadband sector that collects subscription revenues from service provided by its galaxy of orbital satellites is highly profitable. But the space side’s in deficit, and AI’s the biggest burden , imposing nearly $9 billion in operating losses in the past five quarters. At today’s numbers, a pro-forma SpaceX-Tesla would show a GAAP yearly earnings of around minus $1 billion. If anything, the cash flow picture is even more alarming. In the S-1, SpaceX acknowledges that it will be deploying capex to build its AI data center footprint far in excess of the cash it generates from operations for an extended period before that franchise turns highly profitable. Last year, its free cash flow deficit reached $14 billion. Through Q1, Tesla was collecting around $1.5 billion a quarter more in cash from selling cars and batteries than it was spending on plant and equipment, mainly for robots and robotaxis still in development. But that formula’s reversing: For the final nine months of this year, it’s expecting to spend a total of at least $22.5 billion on capex, far more than the cash from operations delivered by the car and battery franchises. Analysts are predicting sharp increases from those levels as Tesla ramps spending on AI infrastructure for self-driving cars, Optimus and robotics facilities, and its Terafab project. So both sides as stand-alones harbor gigantic investment needs that will far outstrip their ability to garner cash from their basic businesses in the years ahead. Those extra tens of billions have to come from somewhere. The S-1 suggests that SpaceX will float more stock and issue debt to fill the gap. That course would dilute shareholders and raise interest expense, curbing profits. Instead of contributing excess cash to ease that burden, adding Tesla––now embarking on a capex blowout––would make the scenario worse. SpaceX and Tesla are already working closely together. The automaker invested $2 billion in xAI, bought by SpaceX in February, and sells the rocket-maker cybertrucks. SpaceX in the past two years has purchased over $700 million in battery storage systems for data centers from Tesla. According to analysts, the deal’s rationale appears to hold that both companies count on riding the AI wave to greatness, and can roar even faster as a team. In its S-1, SpaceX calculates the total addressable market for AI at $26.5 trillion, 13-times the potential for connectivity and rockets combined. But as Trainer points out, huge TAMs attract big competition, and SpaceX-Tesla would face strong pricing pressure from the likes of Amazon and Google in AI, and everyone from T-Mobile to Vodafone in broadband and mobile. As Trainer argues in an excellent, and highly critical, report on SpaceX prospects, it would need to achieve future numbers no company worldwide shows today in order to reward investors buying at a $1.75 trillion market cap. Specifically, using a discounted cash flow analysis, Trainer puts the bogeys for delivering cost-of-capital returns at $248 billion in net income, and $1.1 trillion in revenues by 2035. The sales number is 1.5x bigger than the top line at Amazon, the S&P leader in the category, achieved in the past four quarters. The profit requirement is $90 billion more than the biggest earner, Alphabet, made over the same span. As Trainer puts it, those targets are “really out of this world.” But a merger with Tesla would far more than double the challenge for the original SpaceX shareholders. They’d go from owning 100% of the enterprise to 52%. What they’d get in return is Tesla’s just under $4 billion in current profits, a number that once again is boosted by ephemeral sales of reg credits, and is already falling fast. At Tesla’s current valuation of $1.65 trillion, SpaceX would be spending 420 times earnings, meaning that shareholders are getting just $2.3 in earnings for every $1000 they’re paying. The SpaceX investors would also be shouldering Tesla’s huge capex expenditures in addition their already immense outlays for building out AI. I called Trainer to ask if indeed, it would require 2x the previous numbers for revenues and profits to ring the bell, and he said that’s indeed the case. What are the chances SpaceX-Tesla could achieve nearly $500 billion in profits and $2.2 trillion in revenue a decade from now? As Trainer told me, “It’s a kind of suspended disbelief, squared.” Musk’s proven a wizard at suspending belief to send Tesla and SpaceX valuations to the stars while their earnings remain stuck earthbound. Buying Tesla using SpaceX stock would solve the EV pioneer’s big time over-valuation problem by cashing out its shareholders. But it would only transfer that burden to SpaceX, and make SpaceX’s math problem far worse. Musk’s on the verge of forging a creation that must achieve feats so hard to believe that, at long last, even his today’s true believers may stop believing. Karen Bass appears to liken Spencer Pratt to Trump amid tightening LA mayoral race
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and her challengers spent the final weekend before Election Day crisscrossing the city as a surprisingly competitive mayoral race heads toward a likely runoff. Bass, who is seeking a second term, is up against former reality star Spencer Pratt and city council member Nithya Raman in Tuesday’s primary election. Recent polling has shown a competitive race as no candidate is expected to receive more than 50% of the vote. The top two finishers would then advance to a November runoff. On Saturday, Bass — who is backed by high-profile Democrats, including former Vice President Kamala Harris and California Gov. Gavin Newsom — stopped at Yosemite Recreation Center in Eagle Rock. WATCH: LEFT-WING LA MAYOR FACES REALITY TV CHALLENGER’S BLUNT TAKEDOWNS IN HEATED MAYORAL DEBATE She was seen serving tacos while wearing an apron bearing the slogan "Common Sense and Carne Asada." During an Instagram livestream Saturday, Bass also took aim at Pratt. "You have a failed reality TV star who wants to be famous," she said while speaking with two actresses before appearing to reference President Donald Trump . "We know what it means if you put somebody who is a reality TV star in a seat of power." BAN ON BACKYARD BARBECUES ON CERTAIN DAYS IN CALIFORNIA FLOATED AS OTHERS PUSH BACK HARD Pratt spent part of Saturday criticizing Raman on X, including attacking her recent campaign advertisements. In a video posted to Instagram, Raman pointed to a recent poll and urged supporters to vote. "After millions of dollars of spending against us, we are still here and we are still competitive," she said. KAREN BASS GRILLED OVER BROKEN HOMELESSNESS PROMISE, BLAMES BUREAUCRACY FOR SLOWED PROGRESS Pratt, who is best known for his role on "The Hills," has gained attention in the race by criticizing Bass over the response to the January 2025 wildfires that destroyed thousands of structures, including his Pacific Palisades home. He has also sharply criticized Bass over homelessness , drug addiction and crime. Pratt has gained momentum in recent weeks and secured endorsements from fellow reality television personalities, actors, musicians and media figures. Still, Pratt — a registered Republican — faces significant challenges in a city where Democratic candidates have historically dominated local elections. Hasan Piker defends pro-communist, anti-ICE Singham network activists as 'wonderful people'
As he navigated the crowds in an impromptu appearance at a protest outside the Delaney Hall ICE detention facility, Marxist political influencer Hasan Piker defended figures in the pro-China activist network funded by American Marxist tech millionaire Neville Roy Singham as "wonderful people," while dismissing scrutiny surrounding his Cuba trip. Asked about reporting on Singham's network and its connections to far-left activism , Piker said there is "this environment of suspicion" surrounding Singham and his activities, taking a "sinister shape," but they are "totally above board and totally legal." In recent months, many agitators from the Singham network have fueled, coordinated and organized fiery protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis, New York City, Los Angeles, New Jersey and elsewhere. HASAN PIKER NAMES PRO-CCP TYCOON SINGHAM AS FINANCIER OF 'POLITICAL MOVEMENTS' DESPITE NONPROFIT VENEER The remarks by Piker are noteworthy because the online influencer isn't just a livestreamer on the Twitch platform. With millions of mostly young followers across Twitch, YouTube and social media platforms, he has emerged as one of the most influential — and polarizing — figures on the American left, regularly mobilizing support for candidates and causes aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America. Piker wore a baseball cap emblazoned with the group's logo. Piker has used his platforms to interview, promote and campaign alongside candidates backed by Democratic Socialists of America, helping introduce them to younger voters who consume political content online. His audience reach has made him a significant force in Democratic politics, giving him the ability to shape narratives and drive grassroots enthusiasm for candidates running on socialist and anti-establishment platforms. As reported, Singham is an American Marxist tech tycoon who has pumped $285 million since 2017 into a network of nonprofits that have organized and coordinated divisive anti-American street protests, such as the one unfolding in New Jersey. "I don't have any personal contact with Roy Singham or any of these other people," Piker said, in response to questions from Fox News Digital. "I mean, I know some of these people. They're wonderful people in general. They're activists....None of it is actually hidden or illegal in any way, shape or form." The remarks come as federal investigators have expanded scrutiny of activists involved in travel to communist Cuba, including organizations and individuals linked to the broader network of nonprofits and advocacy groups that have received funding from Singham and his wife, Code Pink co-founder Jodie Evans. GOP LAWMAKERS URGE TREASURY TO PRESS AHEAD WITH PROBE OF HASAN PIKER OVER CUBA TRIP As reported exclusively by Fox News Digital last Saturday, the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sent Piker and CodePink an administrative subpoena as part of an investigation into a March convoy to Cuba. Piker claimed he hadn't personally received any legal notice. "Fox News Digital says I have a subpoena, but I have yet to be served one," Piker said. "So I don't even know what's going on. It kind of feels like you guys have more insight into what the federal government's doing than I do, and I'm supposed to be subpoenaed." Piker's comments follow disclosures by CodePink co-founder Medea Benjamin that Evans received the query via an email that initially landed in a spam folder. "We heard this on Fox News, that there was this subpoena out," Benjamin said in an interview shared publicly by BreakThrough News, another nonprofit that Singham has funded. "I was going outside my front door looking around for somebody to serve me. And it turns out that it was an email that was sent to Code Pink co-founder Jodie Evans, and it was so unofficial that it landed in our spam box." As reported, the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control sent investigative letters seeking financial, logistical and communications documents about the March convoy. The Office of Foreign Assets Control administers and enforces U.S. sanctions programs, including restrictions governing financial transactions and certain travel-related activities involving Cuba. Fox News Digital has reported that the March 2026 convoy to Cuba involved a transnational network of activists organized by another Singham-funded group, the People's Forum, and a nonprofit, Progressive International, both with close ties to the communist regime in Cuba. DAVID MARCUS: HASAN PIKER, USEFUL IDIOT FASHIONISTAS WANT TO MAKE AMERICA INTO COMMIE CUBA The activists are protesting U.S. sanctions on the communist island. Piker participated in the trip alongside members of Code Pink and a network of 145 organizations, according to a Fox News Digital investigation. Piker framed the investigation as part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to target political activists and protesters, arguing that scrutiny of Cuba travel conflicted with Trump's campaign promises to defend free speech . "I feel like there are a lot of people who believed in that message, and now he's betrayed that message," Piker said. Piker told Fox News Digital that he welcomed a debate with Fox News host Sean Hannity . Piker, who was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, was visiting his home state from his $2 million home in West Hollywood, California, canvassing at a Saturday rally in Trenton for a controversial candidate, Adam Hamamy, endorsed by Democratic Socialists of America in his race for the U.S. Congress. The New York Times published a profile on Saturday, noting the candidate's "ties to a militant cleric." Piker defended Hamamy. Last week, on a livestream on the Twitch platform where he talked for about six hours nonstop, the influencer dismissed concerns about his connections to organizations involved in the Cuba convoy, while acknowledging that Singham finances a network of left-wing nonprofits engaged in "political advocacy" and "a lot of political movements." Critics have argued the network functions as a coordinated activist infrastructure advancing pro-communist causes, including support for Cuba, China and other authoritarian governments opposed to U.S. foreign policy. As Fox News Digital asked Piker about concerns related to malign foreign influence from China, including at far-left activist events such as the anti-ICE protest unfolding around him, Piker walked away without answering the question. Piker has polarized people in many communities, including among leftists and Democrats. An activist shouted, "Get out of here," as Piker walked away, punctuating his derision with, "Dog abuser," a reference to allegations Piker trained his dog, Kaya, with a shock collar. Piker has denied the allegations. Fox News Digital's Alex Koch contributed to this report.

The Oklahoma City Thunder took on the San Antonio Spurs Saturday night to decide the Western Conference title, after a back-and-forth series that has seen both teams leading at various points. San Antonio won that title in five games. The Thunder-Spurs Game 7 marked the 160th winner-take-all game in NBA history and the fifth this season. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM Victor Wembanyama led San Antonio with 22 points and seven rebounds in the 111-103 victory. Two-time reigning NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored a team-high 35 points for Oklahoma City. The Knicks swept the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals to reach the NBA Finals for the first time in 27 years. In late April, New York trailed Atlanta 2-1 after back-to-back one-point losses in Games 2 and 3 of their first-round series. The Knicks are 11-0 in playoff games since, winning almost all those games by blowout. No matter who wins this Finals series, it'll be the eighth different franchise to win a title in the last eight seasons — extending the longest such stretch in NBA history. Toronto won in 2019, followed by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, then Milwaukee in 2021, Golden State in 2022, Denver in 2023, Boston in 2024, Oklahoma City last year, and now either New York or San Antonio will be added to that list. No defending champion has even made a repeat trip to the NBA Finals since Golden State won in 2018 and returned in 2019. Entering Saturday, the Spurs had not reached the NBA Finals since winning the 2014 championship, defeating the Miami Heat in five games. California neighborhood on alert after bat found near sidewalk tests positive for rabies virus
A rabid bat found near a California neighborhood has prompted health officials to urge residents to avoid contact with wildlife and seek immediate medical attention if they believe they may have been exposed. On May 26, a bat was found near Palo Verde Common in South Fremont, close to a sidewalk and "within reachable distance of pedestrians and animals," the Fremont Police Department said. Charter bus driver who allegedly caused crash killing 5 in Virginia charged with involuntary manslaughter
A charter bus driver has been charged after he allegedly caused a fatal crash in Virginia that left five people dead. Jing S. Dong, a Staten Island , New York-based driver and non-English-speaking naturalized citizen from China who obtained his commercial license in 2024, has been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and has additional charges pending, the Virginia State Police said on Saturday. Dong allegedly slammed into an SUV in front of his E&P Travel bus in the southbound lane of Interstate 95, causing that driver to crash into another vehicle around 2:35 a.m. Friday in Stafford County. A teenage girl and young boy, who were in the car ahead of the one the bus hit, died along with their parents after their vehicle caught fire. VIRGINIA MAGAZINE EDITOR, 23, KILLED IN HIT-AND-RUN WHILE CROSSING STREET A woman who was in the SUV immediately in front of the bus, was also killed. The family has been identified as Dmitri Doncev, 45, his wife Ecterina, 44, their 13-year-old daughter, Emily and 7-year-old son, Mark, all of Greenfield, Massachusetts . SMALL TOWN VIRGINIA MAYOR REPORTEDLY ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY SHOWING UP DRUNK TO TRAIN DERAILMENT The woman was identified as Priscilla R. Mafalda, 25, of Worcester, Massachusetts. "The preliminary investigation indicates that traffic was slowing southbound for an upcoming work zone. A bus, operated by E&P Travel and heading from New York City to Charlotte, N.C., failed to slow for traffic and struck a Chevrolet Suburban," police said in a news release. "The Suburban was then forced into an Acura SUV as well as additional vehicles. The bus struck additional vehicles as well." U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on Friday revealed that Dong is a naturalized U.S. citizen from China and does not speak English, which is against federal regulations for bus drivers who must be able to speak and understand well enough to do their job safely. "Unacceptable. This is exactly why we are holding states’ accountable, enforcing the rules of the road , and cracking down on drivers who can’t speak English," Duffy wrote on X. "If you can’t be properly trained, read our road signs, or communicate with law enforcement, you have no business driving a bus." Duffy added that the Transportation Department is investigating, " New York licensing records , training documentation, and the driver's history. Any company, trainer, or school that contributed to putting an unqualified driver on the road will face intense scrutiny."
